Following the tragic stampede on January 29 at the ongoing Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which resulted in the deaths of over 30 people, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court. The PIL calls for urgent safety measures to protect the pilgrims visiting the religious site from across the country.
The stampede, which occurred in the Sangam area of Maha Kumbh, left more than 30 devotees dead and over 60 injured.
Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who filed the PIL, has requested the Supreme Court to direct all states to establish facilitation centers at Prayagraj. These centers should provide pilgrims with essential safety information and guidelines. Additionally, the PIL asks for announcements and display boards in regional languages to help guide worshippers traveling from various parts of India.
The petition also calls for the creation of a small medical team, consisting of doctors and nurses, to be stationed at the Maha Kumbh site in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh government, ensuring prompt medical response during emergencies.
Furthermore, the PIL demands accountability for the authorities whose negligence contributed to the stampede and urges the Supreme Court to instruct the Uttar Pradesh government to submit a status report on the incident. It also requests legal action against those responsible for the tragedy.
