Delhi High Court Urges Swift Action on Advocates Protection Bill

The Delhi High Court has urged the Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) to take expeditious steps toward enacting the Delhi Advocates Protection Bill, currently pending approval by the Council of Ministers [Deepa Joseph & Anr v. Union of India & Ors].

Justice Sachin Datta, while hearing an application filed by the Coordination Committee of All District Courts Bar Associations of Delhi, directed the government to share the final draft of the Bill with the applicant body to allow them an opportunity to submit feedback or representations.

The Court recorded the limited request of the Committee and noted that no objections were raised by the Delhi government. Accordingly, it ordered:

“The GNCTD is directed to provide a draft of the Advocate Protection Bill, 2024 to the applicant.”

The Court further emphasized the need for timely legislative action:

“Let the GNCTD take further expeditious steps, as may be deemed expedient, for enacting the Bill.”

The matter is scheduled for further hearing on May 28, 2025.

Key counsel appearances:

  • Aakriti Jain and Abhinav Sharma for GNCTD

  • Ajay Kumar Agarwal for the Bar Council of Delhi

  • KC Mittal and Keshav Poonia for the applicant-committee
