Supreme Court Notifies 21 Vacation Benches for Partial Working Days

In a shift from tradition, the Supreme Court of India has rebranded its annual summer recess as “partial working days” in the official judicial calendar for 2025. As per the latest notification, 21 vacation benches will sit to hear cases between May 26 and July 13, 2025.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has constituted the benches that will be operational during this period, ensuring continuity of judicial functioning even while the court scales down for the summer months.

The composition of benches for each week is as follows:

  • May 26 – June 1 (5 benches):

    • CJI BR Gavai with Justice Augustine George Masih

    • Justices Surya Kant and Dipankar Datta

    • Justices Vikram Nath and Sanjay Kumar

    • Justices JK Maheshwari and Aravind Kumar

    • Justices BV Nagarathna and Satish Chandra Sharma

  • June 2 – June 8 (3 benches):

    • Justices Sanjay Karol and Satish Chandra Sharma

    • Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and SVN Bhatti

    • Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Augustine George Masih

  • June 9 – June 15 (2 benches):

    • Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan

    • Justices SVN Bhatti and PB Varale

  • June 16 – June 22 (2 benches):

    • Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan

    • Justices Sandeep Mehta and PB Varale

  • June 23 – June 29 (3 benches):

    • Justices KV Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh

    • Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and K Vinod Chandran

    • Justices Sandeep Mehta and Joymalya Bagchi

  • June 30 – July 6 (3 benches):

    • Justices MM Sundresh and K Vinod Chandran

    • Justices PS Narasimha and R Mahadevan

    • Justices Manoj Misra and N Kotiswar Singh

  • July 7 – July 13 (3 benches):

    • Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi

    • Justices Pankaj Mithal and KV Viswanathan

    • Justices Rajesh Bindal and R Mahadevan

The court registry will remain operational from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm for all officers and staff on working days, excluding Sundays, holidays, and Saturdays (except July 12, which will be a working day). Non-clerical staff will follow extended hours from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

The Supreme Court will resume normal functioning from July 14, 2025.
