In a shocking incident at a Delhi court, a convict and his lawyer reportedly abused and threatened Judicial Magistrate (NI Act) Shivangi Mangla following her verdict in a cheque bounce case. The courtroom descended into chaos after the accused was convicted under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
The April 2 court order records that the accused, visibly agitated, hurled verbal threats at the judge, saying, “Tu hai kya cheez… bahar mil, dekhte hai kaise zinda ghar jaati hai” (“Who do you think you are… meet me outside and let’s see how you make it home alive”). He also attempted to throw an object at the judge and instructed his lawyer to “do whatever it takes” to reverse the decision.
Following the conviction, the accused and his counsel allegedly harassed the judge further, mentally and physically, and demanded that she resign. They also threatened to file false complaints if she did not acquit the accused.
Judge Mangla, undeterred by the intimidation, affirmed her resolve to uphold justice and stated that appropriate legal action would be initiated against the accused before the National Commission for Women.
In a stern move, the court also issued a show cause notice to Advocate Atul Kumar, counsel for the accused, directing him to explain his conduct and why criminal contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him before the High Court.
“The undersigned shall be taking appropriate measures against the accused before the National Commission for Women for such threatening and harassment,” the court observed, standing firm in the face of courtroom intimidation.
The matter will be taken up on the next date of hearing, where the lawyer is expected to furnish his written response.
