A petition has been filed before the Kerala High Court seeking an immediate ban on the Malayalam movie Empuraan: L2 over its alleged controversial content.
The sequel to Lucifer has sparked controversy due to its depiction of the 2002 Godhra riots and perceived similarities between the film’s primary antagonist and a Bajrang Dal leader.
BJP leader VV Vijeesh has filed the petition, arguing that the film makes unwarranted references to the Godhra riots, includes statements about India’s Ministry of Defence, and portrays central investigation agencies in a way that undermines their integrity. The plea further claims that the movie could incite communal unrest.
The petitioner has urged the Court to immediately halt the screening of the film to prevent further controversy and potential communal tensions. The matter is yet to be listed for hearing.
Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and starring Mohanlal, is the much-anticipated follow-up to the 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. However, the filmmakers—writer Murali Gopy and producer Anthony Perumbavoor—have faced backlash from right-wing commentators, who argue that the film presents an incomplete portrayal of the Godhra riots.
In response, the filmmakers have voluntarily agreed to remove contentious scenes, with the edits expected to take effect in upcoming screenings. Mohanlal also issued a public apology, assuring fans that the controversial elements would be removed and expressing regret for any distress caused.
