Delhi High Court Reshuffles Administrative Committees Amid Allegations Against Justice Yashwant Varma

New Delhi, March 28, 2025 – The Delhi High Court has reconstituted its administrative committees, removing Justice Yashwant Varma from all positions following recent allegations of corruption.

Justice Varma was an integral part of several key committees responsible for overseeing the court’s administrative and judicial operations. These included the Administrative and General Supervision Committee, the Finance and Budgeting Committee, the Judicial Education and Training Programme Committee, and the Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence Committee, among others.

The restructuring follows a controversy that began on March 14, when a fire broke out at Justice Varma’s residence, leading to the discovery of unaccounted cash. Media reports suggest that the incident triggered allegations of corruption against him, although Justice Varma has denied any wrongdoing, calling the claims a conspiracy to malign him.

In response to the allegations, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) initiated an in-house inquiry on March 22, appointing a three-member committee to investigate the matter. Additionally, a video purportedly showing the recovery of burnt cash was shared by the Delhi Police Commissioner with the Chief Justice of the High Court and later made public on the Supreme Court’s website. The Supreme Court also published a report by the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court on the incident, alongside Justice Varma’s official response.

On March 24, the Supreme Court Collegium took decisive action, ordering Justice Varma’s repatriation to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court. This move underscores the judiciary’s commitment to maintaining transparency and integrity within its ranks.

The developments surrounding Justice Varma have raised significant questions about judicial accountability and have drawn widespread attention within the legal community.
