Mumbai Court Grants Bail to 12 Accused of Vandalizing Kunal Kamra’s Show Venue

Mumbai, March 25, 2025 – A Bandra magistrate court on Monday granted bail to 12 Shiv Sena workers, including party leader Rahul Kanal, who were arrested for vandalizing a hotel venue where comedian Kunal Kamra had performed. The accused were released on personal bonds of ₹15,000 each.

The vandalism followed Kamra’s stand-up performance at the Habitat Comedy Club in Khar, during which he referred to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde as a “traitor.” The remark was in reference to Shinde’s 2022 rebellion against then-Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, which led to the Shiv Sena’s split. Kamra also performed a parody of a Bollywood song, mocking Shinde’s political alliance with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Although Kamra did not explicitly name Shinde in the video he shared online, his comments were widely perceived as targeting the leader. The following day, Shiv Sena workers, allegedly led by Kanal, stormed the venue in protest and caused damage.

In response, the police registered two cases—one against Kamra for his remarks and another against those involved in the vandalism. Authorities arrested 12 individuals linked to the incident, who were later remanded to 14-day judicial custody before securing bail.

Police have identified a total of 19 people connected to the case, with some individuals yet to be named or apprehended. Investigations are ongoing.
