Madras High Court Upholds Conviction of MLA MH Jawaharulla, TMMK Leaders in Foreign Funds Case

The Madras High Court has reaffirmed the conviction of MLA MH Jawaharulla and several other leaders of the Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) in a case concerning the alleged receipt of foreign funds. The case, which has drawn significant legal scrutiny, involved charges related to financial transactions that violated regulatory norms governing foreign contributions.

A single-judge Bench of Justice P Velmurugan upheld the conviction and sentence imposed by the lower court, reinforcing the judicial stance on financial irregularities linked to political and social organizations. Despite the confirmation of their conviction, the Court granted temporary relief by directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) not to arrest Jawaharulla and the other petitioners immediately, considering that they were observing fast during the holy month of Ramzan. The Court allowed them a 30-day window to seek a stay on their sentence. If they fail to secure such relief within the stipulated time, the CBI will be permitted to execute the Magistrate Court’s order and proceed with their arrest
