Supreme Court Directs State Protection for Discovery Staff Amid Threats from Asaram Bapu Supporters

The Supreme Court directed the States of Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Delhi, Haryana, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu to ensure the safety of Discovery Communications India’s officials and staff, who are facing threats after the release of the documentary Cult of Fear: Asaram Bapu. A bench led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna ordered police protection, ensuring staff can work without fear of harm.

The Court also issued a notice to the Union of India and the states on a petition filed by Discovery, citing threats from groups claiming to be supporters of Asaram Bapu, currently on interim medical bail. The petition highlighted ongoing threats, including an attempted unauthorized entry into Discovery’s Mumbai office and social media hate campaigns, prompting the company to implement work-from-home arrangements for staff safety.
