Chief Judicial Magistrate Bhagwan Das Gupta, based in Banda, has taken the notable step of ordering a judicial inquiry into the demise of former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Mukhtar Ansari. Ansari passed away on March 28, 2024, reportedly due to a cardiac arrest shortly after being admitted to Rani Durgawati Medical College. An additional Chief Judicial Magistrate has been designated to oversee the inquiry process, with a stipulated timeframe of one month to submit a comprehensive report.
Mukhtar Ansari was entangled in multiple legal cases, notably receiving a life sentence in a 1990 counterfeit arms license case. Additionally, in 2023, a special MP/MLA Court in Varanasi convicted and sentenced him to life imprisonment for the murder of Awadhesh Rai, the brother of Congress leader Ajay Rai.
