Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha has taken her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the Delhi liquor policy case to the Supreme Court.
The 46-year-old Member of Legislative Council (MLC), and daughter of BRS chief and former Telangana Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao, was apprehended following searches at her residence in Hyderabad on Friday and subsequently transferred to Delhi.
Appearing before a Delhi court on Saturday, she was remanded to ED custody for questioning until March 23, as per the agency’s request. The ED had sought a 10-day custody for further investigation.
During her remand period, the court granted Kavitha the opportunity to meet certain relatives, including her brother KTR and husband Anil D, for half an hour daily between 6-7 pm.
Official sources confirmed that KTR availed himself of this opportunity to meet with Kavitha.
In response to her arrest, Kavitha denounced it as “illegal” and a “fabricated case” during her appearance at Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court.
Her legal team has promptly filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court, arguing that her arrest by the federal probe agency contradicts the interim protection granted to her by the Supreme Court in the same case.
Kavitha is alleged to be a prominent member of the ‘South Group’, which stands accused of offering kickbacks amounting to Rs 100 crore to Delhi’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in exchange for a substantial portion of liquor licences in the national capital.
